10/23-10/27: Week 8 Agenda

Monday October 23:

  • Objective: To practice close reading text so we can identify the author's claims, evidence, and reasoning, along with any other key pieces of information. This will allow us to use our source material to the greatest extent possible when conducting project research.
  • Entry: 
    • Whose theory did you find most believable from Claim Testing: Authority Part 2?
    • Why?
    • Do you think human society "advances" over time?
    • How can you tell?
  • Activity: 
      • Introduction to SCUBA sheets Links to an external site.. Please make sure you save a copy of this sheet in your Google Drive folder for this class, we will be using it frequently.
      • SCUBA practice: Please read the short article excerpt The Neolithic Revolution: A Counterclaim using the SCUBA method. 
      • The following is the guiding question to use on your annotation sheet:
        • Do you think the invention of agriculture was actually bad for human beings? Why or why not?
      • Closing: 
        • Thumbometer: How comfortable do you feel with the SCUBA method after your first time using it?

Tuesday October 24

  • Objective to continue practice using our Scuba sheets and Claim Testers to evaluate a primary source document.
  • Entry:
    • What is a primary source?
    • What is a secondary source?
    • Why is it important to know the difference between them?
  • Activity: Complete a Scuba Links to an external site. sheet with annotations for "The Earth: A Plane" Links to an external site.
  • Exit: On a fist two five scale, how complete is your SCUBA sheet?

 Wednesday October 25/Thursday October 26

  • Objective: To develop our understanding of how to vet websites for credibility and reliability when doing academic research using our website evaluation checklist. 
  • Entry:
    • If you could have any superpower what would it be?
    • Why?
    • Would you use it to help people?
  • Activity: 
  • Exit:
    • What are the differences between websites that end in .com, .org, and .edu?
    • What are the most important things to look for when deciding if a website is trustworthy?

Friday October 27:

  • Objective: To continue practicing website evaluation and learn to distinguish between misinformation, disinformation and propaganda.
  • Entry: 
    • What types of false information might someone run into on the internet?
    • Where, in your experience, does most of this false information come from?
  • Activity: 
    • Begin working on the Misinformation, Disinformation, and Propaganda assignment in Canvas. 
  • Exit: On a scale of 1-10 how close are you to completing the assignment we started today?
