Monday October 15

Tuesday October 16:

  • Objective: Begin to identify strategies to analyze and test the accuracy of claims in written work.
  • Entry: 
    • What is a claim?
    • How can you tell whether a claim that someone makes is true of false?
  • Activity: Claim testing: Introduction. Work to complete the activity in your groups, each person be ready to discuss their thinking with the whole class.
  • Closing: Debrief our activity.

Wednesday October 18/ Thursday October 19

  • Objective: To develop strategies for weighing the merits of contradictory claims made by multiple experts or "authorities" on the same topic.
  • Entry: 
    • Make a claim for the following prompt: What is the best season?
      • Support with evidence and reasoning.
  • Activity: Claim testing: Authority. You will work in table groups to complete your packets collaboratively. Each person must submit their own individual packet of work.
    • Which expert do you think made the strongest claim based on our work today?

Friday October 20

  • Objective: To practice close reading text so we can identify the author's claims, evidence, and reasoning, along with any other key pieces of information. This will allow us to use our source material to the greatest extent possible when conducting project research.
  • Entry: 
    • Whose theory did you find most believable yesterday?
    • Why?
    • Do you think human society "advances" over time?
    • How can you tell?
  • Activity: Finish Claim Testing: Authority (Due Monday)
